推敲故事英語

The story of Jiu Jiao (推敲) is a classic example of how Chinese writers and poets developed their craft through careful consideration and repeated experimentation. The story goes that Li Bai (Li Bo in modern Chinese) was trying to find the right wording for a poem and kept going back and forth between two possible options, "Jiu Jiao" (敲) and "Xiao Jiao" (校). He finally decided to ask his friend Ouyang Xun (now known as the "Father of Poetry") for help to determine which wording was better. Ouyang Xun looked at the two words and said, "The difference between 'Jiu Jiao' and 'Xiao Jiao' is like the difference between jade and wood. The former is delicate and pure, while the latter is just a mere collection of words." Li Bai was thus convinced by Ouyang Xun's explanation and adopted "Jiu Jiao" as his final choice. This story became a classic example of how poets refine their craft through meticulous attention to detail and continuous experimentation.
