Once upon a time, there was a brave farmer named Cowherd. He lived alone on the edge of a lake and raised many cows. Every day, he would play his flute and sing beautiful songs. One day, he met a beautiful woman named Mao Erjie in the lake. They fell in love and she became his wife.
However, Mao Erjie was a goddess from the sky and had to return to her own world at night. She missed her family and friends and often cried for them. Cowherd was sad to see her sad and could only hug her tightly and sing songs to comfort her.
Every year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, the gods would throw open the heavenly gate and let Mao Erjie come down to visit her husband for one night. This was the most wonderful time for them.
